Couples Therapy: Strengthening Connection with the Gottman Method
Relationships can be a meaningful source of comfort, belonging, and support but even strong relationships can go through difficult seasons. Busy schedules, parenting, financial stress, health concerns, unresolved hurts, or major life transitions can leave partners feeling disconnected or caught in patterns they do not know how to change.
Couples therapy offers a supportive space to slow down, understand what is happening beneath those patterns, and begin finding new ways to communicate and connect.
When Might Couples Therapy Help?
Couples do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Some partners seek support because they are struggling with frequent conflict, while others come because the relationship has begun to feel distant, tense, or more like a practical partnership than an emotional one.
Couples therapy may be helpful when you are:
Having the same arguments without reaching a resolution
Feeling misunderstood, dismissed, or disconnected
Struggling to communicate about difficult topics
Navigating parenting, finances, intimacy, or changing responsibilities
Adjusting to a major transition or stressful life event
Working through hurt, resentment, or a loss of trust
Hoping to strengthen your relationship before concerns become larger
Wanting to better understand one another’s needs and experiences
Seeking therapy does not mean that your relationship has failed. It can mean that your relationship matters enough to receive care and attention.
What Is the Gottman Method?
At Connected Roots Therapy, our approach to couples therapy is informed by the Gottman Method, a research-based approach developed by psychologists Drs. John and Julie Gottman.
The Gottman Method helps couples recognize the interaction patterns that contribute to conflict and disconnection while building the skills that support friendship, respect, emotional safety, and partnership.
Rather than deciding who is “right” or “wrong,” therapy focuses on helping both partners understand what happens between them. This may include exploring how each person responds when they feel hurt, overwhelmed, criticized, or disconnected and learning ways to respond differently.
What Might We Work On in Couples Therapy?
Depending on your relationship, needs, and goals, therapy may help you:
Communicate more clearly and listen with greater understanding
Express needs without blame or criticism
Manage conflict without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down
Recognize and interrupt unhelpful relationship patterns
Repair after disagreements or moments of disconnection
Rebuild friendship, appreciation, and affection
Strengthen emotional and physical intimacy
Navigate ongoing differences with greater respect
Create shared meaning, values, and goals
Build a stronger sense of teamwork
The goal is not to eliminate every disagreement. Conflict is a normal part of close relationships. Instead, couples can learn how to move through difficult moments in ways that protect connection, preserve respect, and make room for both partners’ experiences.
What Can You Expect?
Couples therapy begins with getting to know your relationship: its history, strengths, current challenges, and the hopes each partner brings to therapy. Together, you and your therapist will identify goals and begin developing a clearer understanding of the patterns affecting your connection.
Sessions may include guided conversations, practical communication strategies, and exercises that help you understand each other more deeply. Your therapist will support both partners while remaining focused on the wellbeing of the relationship as a whole.
Couples therapy can be vulnerable, and meaningful change often takes practice both inside and outside the therapy room. You will not be expected to communicate perfectly. Therapy offers a place to try new approaches, make repairs, and build on the strengths that are already present in your relationship.
